Heh I’m trying to entertain myself. So I came up with this fictitious piece of news.
Popular chewing gum brands like Wrigley’s set to hit stores by the end of July 2009.
The chewing gum ban in Singapore was enacted in 1992 and revised in 2004. Since 2004, only chewing gum of medicinal value can be purchased in Singapore. However, by the end of July 2009, Singaporeans would be allowed to possess and consume chewing gum.
The chewing gum ban was enforced because people chose to stick gum under places like chairs or tables. Such irresponsible and ungracious behaviour led to the ban in 1992. Because of the ban, Singapore has received much flak from the international community. But this will change come July 2009.
Said Lary Gocke, the United States’ Secretary of Commerce, “Singapore is definitely making a move in the right direction. It was certainly a ‘fine’ decision to allow the import and sale of chewing gum. No puns intended.
Echoing the same sentiments, Singapore’s Minister for Trade & Industry Lim Kng Hiang had this to say, “I’m pretty excited about this change. In fact, I’m looking forward to purchasing Wrigley’s Juicyfruit chewing gum myself. Helps to keep me awake in Parliament sessions.”
The news of the lift on the ban of chewing gum has certainly created a buzz in Singapore. Quite obviously, this piece of news has also not gone well with senior citizens.
“I have already asked my American friends to ship over some exotic flavours of chewing gum. I think this is going be the next ‘in’ thing, chewing gum,” a visibly estatic Amandine Tan, 17, said.
“Chewing gum is such a vile thing. I wonder why the Government decided to reverse the ban. It’s just illogical,” Tan Ah Goy, 83, grumbled in Teochew.
Her husband who was sitting next to her nodded in assent.
